Wow, its 2012....Happy new year...a bit late on the wishes, its February now, its never to late to wish, right? Havent had the chance to update my blog, must remember to do it often. When I dont update, I tend to forget my password, thank god, I remembered it this time around.2012, so far, a good start for me, I'm still doing my daily supplies to Toyota, thank god for that, have added additional food for a change, Chicken wraps, Cheese sausage rolls, some sausage and chicken balls, and a few others added to the list too. I've taken some photos on my Ipad(a gift from my husband for Christmas), but I dont know how to transfer them to the computer, maybe I'll try it from the Ipad direct, hope it works.

Wow its already 20th of November 2011, how time flies...soon it will be a new year. I have been busy not that much on baking but moving house after the recent Hari Raya Fitri, alot of work packing and unpacking. In the midst of that, I managed to still take orders for Deepavali and doing my routine catering at Toyota. Alhamdullilah. I got myself a new oven and learning the temperature control and the behaviour of the new oven was also a challenge. A few times, the plug was burned..found out after calling the service center that it was fixed with a different amp. Now all running smoothly except that my work space is now limited. My kitchen at the new house is not as big as in Rawang and Bukit Jelutong...hoping to make it bigger when the funds are in, till then will have to make do with what I have. I have started to supply cakes and savouries to the club cafe, teething problem..but hope it will pick up soon. Wish me well.

Have been away from the blog for a long long time, time to update. Baking is now done mostly on weekends. My everyday routine is supplying to the Customer Lounge at Toyota Showroom and service center in Subang Jaya. Its mostly breakfast food like Sandwiches, Nasi Lemak, fried Tom Yam Mee Hoon, Fried Maggie mee, Roti Arab, Roti John, Roti Ayam, Sausage bread. It keeps me busy, so Sunday is my only off day.
I still bake for the orders that I received, so this are all the recent ones.

this was Boxing day lunch which I invited my family over, we had Chicken Devil curry, Tomato orange soup, Buttered green peas with onions, french loaf, salad with thousand island and vinaigrette . We had turkey stew too.

Wow, its now 2011, Happy New Year. I havent update this blog since last year, well actually since 18th of December. Its been a busy time in December 2010, this year I had a lot of orders for my Turkey.. three different ways that I roast this year, one marinated with rosemary and thyme and soaked with apple cider for the whole night. The other is with Chinese 5 spice and stuffed with water chestnut and the other type stuffed with Briyani rice.
I had orders too for pineapple tarts, pumpkin slice and a lot of suji cakes.
2010 was awesome. I hope 2011 will be a good year for me...InsyaAllah.

I have not been updating my blog for awhile now. I have been busy with my daily deliveries at Toyota. Today is my 1st Sunday after 3 weeks that I did not have to wake up at 4am to prepare the food. The daily orders were just for breakfast at their Customer Lounge. I provide Nasi Lemak, Mee Hoon Tom Yam, Mee Goreng, Maggi Goreng, fried Kway Teow, Sandwiches- Tuna, Sardines, Cheese, Eggs, also Hot Dogs, Burgers, Egg Banjo, Roti John, Roti Ayam, and Blueberry pancakes. The past 3 weekends, Toyota also requested food for their showroom. I have provided, Apple pies, Portugese egg tarts, Blueberry almond tarts, Cinnamon rolls, Croissants and Mango pudding. I have also make some birthdays cakes that I have received from my other customers.

Yes, its finally done, my annual baking of Raya cookies. Today, my oven baked the last of Suji cakes orders. Now, I can sit back and relax a bit. My rendang is on the stove, will be bringing this to my dear son in Langkawi. He wont be back for Raya, so we are bringing Raya to him. Baked his favorite cookies, Chocolate chip cookies and Blackcurrant Cornflakes. Wanted to bring cakes too but he didnt want them.
I would like to thank my friends and my sisters friends for their continuous support in ordering the Raya cookies this year. I know I did not market the cookies this year but Alhamdullillah the orders were still a lot. I'm not getting any younger and I do feel very tired nowadays. I cant seem to do as much as I want to.
This Ramadan, I also still had orders for other cakes for birthdays and farewell. That kept me busy too.

Today being my son's 18th birthday, I cooked all his favorite food, starting with Pizza for buka puasa, cooked Nasi tomato, Ayam Masak Merah, Fried Tiger Prawns with kunyit, mixed vegetables with Japanese tofu and for dessert, Chocolate and coffee mousse with bananas and chocolate chips. I also baked for him two cakes, Chocolate Banana Cake and Blueberry cake, Tomorrow is my aerobic instructor'sbirthday so I baked and surprised her with a Butter cake with butter icing. I decorated it with a figure as shown in the picture. I still need a lot of practice for the figure, but I think it was not too bad.

I thought I'll just post this recipe, its really nice. All you need is
2 ripe avocados -mashed
1/2 big onions- chopped finely
1/2 fresh tomato - dice
2 tsp of sour cream
a tbsp of lemon juice
salt

Put all the above together and walla you have a great dip, you can have it with nachos or baked tortillas.

By the way, this recipe is courtesy of Danial Dewind who works at the Four Seasons Resort in Langkawi. He prepares this all the time for the hotel guests.

Yesterday I catered for my friend's son birthday, no cakes involved just party food- two types of Fried Meehoon- white pepper filled with lots of vegetables and secondly nyonya style. I also did fruit tartlets and Crispy Szechuan fried chicken wings. For those who are interested to cater from me, check out my previous blog, I do a lot of finger food- savoury and sweets. I was up today at 5am, in fact couldnt sleep because I was thinking of making cookies. I was supposed to sent it over to my friend a few days back. I was very busy baking 3 birthday cakes during the weekend so I couldnt do her orders. So today I started at 6am and finally finished at 330pm, I was really tired. She also ordered some cupcakes and muffins. I havent bake muffin for a long time, my 1st attempt didnt rise at all, had to throw them in the bin, I dont know what I did wrong, thank God there was enough ingredients to make another batch. Manage to make some samples of cupcakes for a friend who wanted it for her daughter's wedding. the theme is black, lilac and white, I do hope she likes it.

Banana buttermilk cake sandwich with walnut toffee and covered with double cream frosting

The above cupcakes and cake was baked during the weekend. I was not satisfied with my disco theme, my dancing figures kept breaking, and making the disco ball was tough, I had to do it several times, finally took two cupcakes, sandwich them together and covered it with fondant. I should have used gum paste or marzipan for the figures, would you believe it, I couldnt get them both because they were out of stock at the two bakery shop I went to.
The chef uniform cake was made for my son's 21st birthday, he is by the way a chef ( well still new- a commis). The cake is nice but a bit too sweet for me, the frosting that is, must reduce the sugar for frosting next time.
The Banana buttermilk cake is lovely , I'm not much of a banana fan but it taste good with the walnut toffee.

I havent been updating this blog for a long time, mainly because I was busy with orders and also on Facebook, for those who dont know, you can follow me on FB at Bakes from Wan's dapur. R ecently , well actually on Saturday 29th of May, I was involved in Relay for Life, This is my 2nd year of participation, I operated a food stall selling Chicken curry pies, Tuna puffs, Blueberry pies, Apple pies, Lasagne, Spaghetti Bolognese , Creamy mushroom fettucine, Tom yam mee hoon and Nasi lemak. Alhamdullilah by 11pm, all of my pies and fettucine was sold off, I was left with a dozen spaghetti not sold. I decided to go back and prepare for my breakfast menu, the meehoon and nasi lemak. Went to sleep by 1.30am and got up at 3.30am to prepare the food. Everything ready by 5 and we( my daughter and I) were back at our stall by 615am. Sales was slow, so I had to take the food to the participant on the field and manage to sell them. The venue this year was not as good as last year ...we were at an open field this year, last year it was at the stadium, this year it rained and the place was all soggy and muddy, got electric shock from my oven and hot plate due to the rain. Unfortunately my sales for breakfast was poor, so before going back gave all the food to the volunteers, they deserve it for all the work they put in. Well, this wont dampen my spirit, waiting for next year RFL....

Decided to decorate some small cakes this week, all four cake is chocolate moist cake, They are covered with chocolate fudge and butter icing. The flowers are sugar paste and royal icing. The cakes are good for door gifts, party giveaways and also as wedding favors. The are price between RM6- RM8 accordingly. They can be packed individually in a box.

I will be conducting some baking classes in Rawang soon. perhaps this is also good, I can also brush up on my baking skills. sometimes when you have stop baking certain food, you tend to forget some of the ingredients that go with it. I have memorize some of the ingredients of certain food that I no longer need to check my recipe book, so brushing up before the baking class is training for me too. My students are mostly friends at Rawang, they want to learn a lot of things, but surprisingly most want to learn to make everyday food rather than making cakes, they want to learn Italian food - lasagne, pizza and pies . Healthy food is also one of their request...hmmm..got to look that one up.
Okay, looking forward to an awesome baking experience.

You can never ever finish learning about things, this also include baking. I am eager to learn more but sometimes time does not permit me to attend classes to learn new techniques on decorating cakes. These classes are expensive too, not to mention you sometime need to purchase new baking tools to go with it. So in order to keep up, I now learn all these thru trial and error, flipping through various cook books and references...sometime it works, sometimes it doesnt. Well, I guess that's the way to learn. Over the years, I have been comfortable with what I have learned at various cooking and baking classes but lately I feel that all that is just not enough....I need to improve. I've decided that even though I dont have the means to this expensive classes, I still have my determination to learn it on my own. I hope I will be able to show some of my new creations in due time, so at the mean time...these are some of the updates of recent bakes- (not the new ones yet).

Updating my blog

Hari raya have passed, Deepavali went by and Hari raya haji is just round the corner, Chritmas will be here in a month and a half, I have yet to update photos during the recent Deepavali celebration, I took orders without posting any photos for the Diwali recently, sorry about that, time didnt permit me to do so. Everything went well, I even had a special cake make with a kolam design which I completely forgot to take until I delivered the cake. I have been receiving orders for the upcoming weddings in November and December and am looking forward to preparing all that including special orders for jelly and puddings for hantarans.
As usual I will be taking orders of Roast Turkey for Christmas and also the usual orders of Suji Fruit cakes. The Chocolate Log will be one of the hot favorite orders from my regulars. I will be posting photos of these items soon for those not familiar with the said items. I promise to update you with all these before the month ends, so please be patient with me.

I've not been updating my blog as I have been busy baking cookies and cakes for the coming raya, today I finally had a bit of a break from baking, I did bake this morning some suji cakes and the remaining cookies ordered recently. I started my delivery since Saturday, so it has been quite a rush to complete everything when you are doing solo. Alhamdulillah, everything went very smoothly, my last delivery will be this Friday, some pies and cakes. After that I need to prepare some for my own. Orders are already coming in for Deepavali and for upcoming weddings and engagement during the next school holidays, so I will be posting new photos then. Its been a while since I took photos of cakes that was ordered, most of the time I tend to forget until its too late, i.e till I sent it to my customers. Well, here are a few that I manage to capture.

Sugar boxes

This sugar boxes are usually ordered by customers of mine for hantarans and also as door gifts. They come in shapes of heart, round and squares. since it is a tedious job and the duration to make it takes a few days to do, i usually require at least 3 weeks advance notice. A minimum order of 10pcs is required at any one order.For orders more than 50 pieces, advance notice of 1-2 months is required. They are priced at RM7.oo each. Should you require a box for it, there will be an extra charge of RM3.00 for it which also includes a ribbon attached to it.

Photos of Rasputin, apple and blueberry pies, plus chicken curry pies with flaky puff pastry. The sweet pies are priced at RM2.50 per piece and Rasputin at RM2.80 per piece. The chicken curry pies comes in two sizes, medium and big, priced at RM2.50 and RM3.50 respectively. You can order the Curry chicken pies with short crust pastry too and they cost the same. Pies, pies, and more pastries

Pies......Everybody loves pies, my selection of pies include, chicken mushroom pies, they are moist inside, filled with fresh mushroom, chunks of chicken, carrots, green peas, potatoes, celery cooked with mushroom soup and then placed in short crust pastry and baked. The pastry is light and buttery, one bite and you know you need to continue and finish it and go for another one ...hmmm... seemly delicious.....

Curry chicken pies, these pies are baked and filled with mince chicken, potatoes, curry powder, coriander, curry leaves and a slice of boiled egg, i have 2 choices of pastry to go with it, puff pastry and short crust pastry, both are simply wonderful.

My next pie is call Rasputin, this pie originate from my late aunty from medan, she taught my mom this and it has been the family favourite dish since it was introduced, the pie is filled with diced french beans, carrots, potatoes, celery , soo hoon add lots of black pepper, the underlayer and top is filled with mashed potatoes. It is best eaten with Lingam's chilli sauce for that authentic taste. It really gives you that feeling of fullness and satisfaction once you have taken that big slice of it.....

This next pastry is called calzone, its actually an italian dish but i've made some changes to it to make it my style, its filled with chunks of meat or chicken which ever is preferred, pototoes and cooked wit curry powder, the filling includes cheddar cheese and mozarella cheese, the crust is wrap with short crust pastry and shaped like a huge karipap and baked. it oozes with cheese when you dig into it and its simply mouth watering...

Some like it fried and some like it bake, so my next pastry dish is baked karipap, this pastry is filled with curried potatoes and chicken except that the crust is short crust pastry, so it has a buttery taste to it, its not oily and great if you are avoiding fried food. I also make the spiral karipap filled with curried potatoes and chicken. this of course is fried and not baked.

I love sweet pies, i have several selection for that, apple, blueberry, strawberry pies, they are all baked in sweet short crust pastry, the feel of the buttery crust and sweetness of the fruits are simply divine, i always have 2, if you are a lover of sweet pies, do try the apple pies..

My pies comes in several sizes, you can order a big pie 7",9"and 10" or if you prefer to eat in small portion you can order them in small or medium size baked in aluminum foil as shown in the photos above.

My passion

My fond memories of baking is watching my aunt baked cookies during fasting month, she would take out her book of recipes and start making lovely cookies or cakes, i would of course be her little assistant, beating the butter and sugar with the wooden spoon, it use to take quite a while to get it creamy, but i enjoyed it. My first bake was a fruit cake when I was 12 years old, I brought it to school for my class exhibition, I won a price for my effort, my teachers were really impress with my cake. Then the second time around, I bake a cake with frosting to be given to my parents, who were then staying in Kuala Lumpur, I ask my Aunt, Mak Tam to take it back with her to K.L, I however never got any feedback from them. That was the last of my baking....
When my granfather pass away, I had to rejoin my parents in Kuala Lumpur, that was when I learn how to cook, there was no commerce class in MGS, so I had to take homescience instead, so it was back to learning how to cook again. My mother is a good cook, I love to watch her cook, smell the lovely aroma that comes out from her kitchen, but i never helped her, my sisters were the ones that are always in the kitchen helping out. Even though I dont help in the kitchen, i love to see her do her stuff, especially making makmor and kuih kacang. My favourite was cucuk badak, that i remember helping, cuz i wanted to shape the cucuk badak, my sisters never knew this, but when it comes to dividing the cucuk badak, I often take extra, I will hide it somewhere else and eat them later. I just love mak's cucuk badak. now i know how to make them myself and I only make them during the fasting months. Its like a real treat...
I love to bake, not for myself but for my families and friends. I seriously started baking after going to Azrah Khan's classes ... that was 12 years ago, now i bake and sell my cakes, cookies, savouries, etc....I am starting this blog in order to put my work in the net, I hope topost all the photos and items available soon, so please dont forget to check it out again.
